Sights

There are many more attractions in Rome than the world famous ones. Inside as well as outside the walls there are many interesting sites waiting to be discovered by the tourist. This website is dedicated to the sights that are located outside the Aurelian Walls.
Already 2000 years ago the urban fabric of Rome stretched out far beyond the city walls. In the rural areas around it, the so-called campagna romana many suburban villas were located, along the consular roads the mausoleums and tombs of the noble Roman families were lined up.
With the course of the centuries many of these buildings have been destroyed. Some of the ruins served as basis for other buildings in the following centuries. In this way the Medieval watch towers along the consular roads and the farm houses of the noble families were created. A net was created, consisting of ruins and buildings originating from different historic periods. In the 20th century the remains were slowly included into the modern quarters, as the city expanded again beyond the city walls. Many ancient ruins have been destroyed, others have been conservated. What has remained, whether it is still beautifully integrated in the campagna romana or whether it is in sharp contrast to the modern city, is still very interesting to be visited.
On the following pages you can find descriptions and information on many of the attractions. Along with the necessary information a visitor has to know the coordinates of the sight will be given. The coordinates refer to the map "Roma Metro-Bus" (silver gray cover) that you can find in any bookshop in Rome. It is wise to use this map when exploring the Roman outskirts by public transportation means. Capital coordinates (e.g. A8) refer to the more detailed part of the map, the others (e.g. f7) refer to the backside of the map which covers the whole city territory and which hence is less detailed.
This website is still under construction, so come and have a look from time to time.
