Castles, farm houses and medieval settlements

The campagna romana, the Roman countryside, has always been the site of agricultural activities as well as a place for settlements. Many country houses, castles and small medieval towns (the so-called borghi) have been realized there. Many of these have survived the times. Some host farms, others bed&breakfast units, others again restaurants. Unfortunately, though, the largest part of them has been abandoned and therefore destroyed.

S. Vittorino

S. Vittorino S. Vittorino S. Vittorino is the name of a pretty medieval settlement which is located on a high rising rock. Its entrance is protected by a castles which once was had been owned by the Barberini family. It is located about 30 km east of the city center, close to the city of Tivoli (but still on Roman city territory). When the weather is good one can have a splendid look at Rome.
The settlement's structure is being characterized by the two little squares and their surrounding buildings. Apart from the castles the town has a small church, too.
Its surroundings invite to have a walk and offers the possibility to escape the hectic of the city. Beautiful rests of antique aqueducts and a medieval watchtower can be "discovered" as well as some ancient farmhouses.
Besides all of this S. Vittorino is an important place for pilgrims: just outside the town there is a - architectonically very interesting - "branch" of the Portuguese pilgrim destination Fatima: the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Fatima, the Church of Our Lady of Fatima.
